Has anyone tried the new clay from Sculpey called 'studio'? i've just ordered myself a couple of blocks to see what its like, from what i've read it sounds pretty good, the only thing I would say against it so far is the colours, can't make up my mind whether I like them or not.

I haven't tried the clay yet, Katt but I HAVE got some of the tools.

The texture plates are fantastic. Sooooooooooooooooo deep. I used one on my Mica Shift pendant I posted recently (sold it already) and they're brilliant.

Don't waste your money on the knife though. I was very disappointed with that. The blade is most certainly NOT sharp and it's very thick too, so you can't get a clean cut.

When it arrives, could you tell me what temperature it bakes at, please?

I rather like the colours - a bit more subtle than some makes!

Thanks for sharing about the knife Lorranine, was thinking of gettin some tools, won't bother with the knife now though, do like the look of the rubber tools. Caroline will let you know on the baking temps, do think the colours look like a paint chart for emulsion? although I suppose it does say to fit in with your home decor Very Happy

I would be curious to hear how you like the clay. I haven't tried it myself.

Personally speaking a clay range needs a translucent for me to take it seriously - just too many cool clay techniques using translucent clays.

It seems to me this range is almost trying to capture the Makin's clay, home decor market.

I quite like some of the colours, but not enough to restock my clay stash. After all I can make the same colour palette by just mixing any colour I want with fleshtone clay like Puppenfimo or whatever.

I get the impression also that the clay is designed more for moulding and shaping projects, so I wonder if it will cane well or not?

I'll let you know what it's like and I'll even try out a very simple cane to see how it copes Embarassed , I agree with you Emma about the translucent clay, I love the stuff. While we're on the subject of translucent clay, is there any difference between the soft and the classic in terms of transparency?

Very Happy

The new clay has arrived, on first inspection it seems lighter in weight and not so dense, colours are good, no smell to it, I broke a peice off and it conditions down well just using your hands, now it says that it will hold its shape but I don't know how much as the more I played with it the more conditioned it got and the consistency was almost like chewed chewiing gum, it has a nice surface texture, very suede like. It bakes at 130' for 30mins like fimo. I'm gonna go and make something quick and bake it in a minute to see what its like after. Very Happy

It sounds exactly like Sculpy Light, Katt.
I bet they took that and coloured it you know.

I bought a large block of that to try and it was like playing with marshmallow, but.....it did hold its shape and it is strong.

Looking forward to seeing your results, hun.

I made some quick lump cats just to test it. The large cat is premo, the middle cat is studio and the small one is fimo, all scrap clay but can still get a feel for it. I would say all in all there isn't alot of difference was baked, the studio was very soft once conditioned and really not sure if it would hold a cane, I suspect not. The studio has a slight matt feel to it.

Hmmmm, interesting, Katt. It sounds to me like it would NO WAY work for canes. I know the Sculpey Light wouldn't, but it's excellent for interior forms.

Loving those cats. Thumbs up Daisy Mr. Green

sorry to butt in. I've just bought some fimo for some first attempts and am now wondering if I've bought the right stuff. Does fimo soft cane well?

Admittedly I'm only playing at the moment.

Aw those cats are so CUTE!

And I am so not into figurine type things as a rule.

Very interesting to hear how you found the clay in use too. Thanks for sharing that.

Hi Caire, you'd be better off using fimo classic as it holds its shape better, if you find the fimo soft too soft you could try leaching it, I've never done this but I think what you do is roll it out and put it onto a normal piece of paper over night or at least a few hours, you will then find that the clay is then firmer and not so soft, hope this is the right info, if not hopefully someone else can correct me. Claire, you can use the soft fimo for canes but keep sticking it in the fridge at different stages eg before you slice the canes. You may find some colours are softer than others too. I have just changed to classic and it is easier to work with but you can always try it when you've had a few goes.
