One of my friends makes them. I tried to source the flower shell but impossible... She had bought them in a shop in France.
She adds swarovski on top, woven with monofilament. Not sure if that's what you mean.
I have a book on beaded rings but it's in French (they are very popular in France). Obviously i can't find it right now , otherwise I could scan some pages and email them to you.... It's very graphic so easy to follow.

That sounds exactly what I mean Bea, if you find the book I would really appreciate it if you could scan the pages for me.

They look like buttons to me why not have a look in your local haberdashery, I have seen some lovely flower shaped abalone shell ones. You may also be able to find fancy buttons in the scrapbooking or patchwork sections in the craft shops.
Otherwise see if you can raid Mum or Grans button box.

Ok, I trawled some of the French websites. Tons of rings with Swaro but finally, with the right key words (!), found an example. It's from someone's blog.
